Atlas Coal Mine

The Atlas is the last of 139 mines that once ruled the Drumheller Valley and stands today as a unique and fascinating reminder of the days when Coal was King! Climb the last wooden tipple in Canada.  Jump aboard our 1936 mine locomotive and rumble down the tracks.

Venture underground and walk the path of the miners up through a 210 foot conveyor tunnel. Wander through an intact historic landscape, in a stunning badlands setting. Hear the stories of the men who dug for coal.  

The Atlas Coal Mine is home to the last wooden tipple in Canada.  There are 9 original buildings to be explored, including the evocative wash house, miner’s shack and well-preserved mine office.  Machinery buffs will enjoy the extensive machine display as well as a ride on a fully restored Mancha locomotive.  The newly restored underground conveyor tunnel and blacksmith shop are ready for those who are looking for a little adventure. Dynamic guides make it all come together in fun and fascinating ways.  There is something for the whole family!
