The Town of Strathmore offers numerous development opportunities, with a broad base of commercial, industrial and residential land, primed for development. The Town owns 583 acres of prime land, immediately south of Highway #1, with direct controlled access to the highway. This land is suitable for commercial and industrial development, and can accommodate industry of any size. In addition the Town has recently annexed in 18 ½ quarter sections of land, which are intended for a variety of Land Uses. We have recently completed the construction of a regional waterline from Calgary, and upgraded our Waste Water Treatment Plant. This new infrastructure will support the Towns long term plan for sustainable smart growth, and will meet the needs of both the current population, and the needs of future generations to come.
Strathmore began as a community willing to give more when on July 28, 1883 Canadian Pacific forces manually laid 6.38 miles of track across the prairies to set a record. For a town this was a significant stretch of track because it ended that day on the South side of what was later to become the unloading point for thousands of settlers.
In 1905, with the development of the irrigation system, the original Hamlet of Strathmore was moved four miles north and centered around the 5,600 foot siding there. This move to its present location is what gave the town its legacy “the town that moved”.
Quality of life in Strathmore is exemplified by excellent school systems, outstanding hospital, attractive neighborhoods with many well maintained parks; featuring Kinsmen Park – complete with amphitheatre and fountain, and numerous recreational opportunities, including trails; a Family Centre with two rinks; indoor pool including a 6 lane, 25-meter long pool; complete with a diving board, tot slide and climbing wall, a children’s play pool, which goes from a depth of zero to 0.8 meters deep, a large hot tub, a water slide, and two multi-purpose rooms; outdoor spray park; skateboard park; ball diamonds; fitness clubs; tennis courts; a Seniors Centre, and much more.
There is something for everyone here: art, music, culture, nature, shopping, entertainment and sports, annual December/January Celebration of Lights and affordable Housing.
Rodeo has been an integral part of Alberta’s history and the spirit and enthusiasm for this western sport remains strong and vibrant in the Town of Strathmore during the long weekend of August. The Wednesday, prior to the long weekend, is the Kick-Off to Heritage Days, with Strathmore’s Got Talent. This even showcases our local talent of all ages, in all areas of the entertainment world. Whether it is song, dance, magic tricks, gymnastics or your favorite trained animal, come on out and enjoy the evening that features the best sound and the best beef in town!
The famous Running with the Bulls event, which patterns itself after Spain’s Pamplona, is a heart stopping, exciting two nights that brings people from all over to watch the brave (and maybe a little crazy) people run with the rodeo bulls that would just as soon hook you and trample you as they would run by you! Just what the audience wants!
Following the rodeo each day is the Half Mile of Hell races. The WPCA brings out the best of the 36 wagon drivers as they pit their horses and their driving stills against each other to come out on top.
The Encana Stage draws hundreds to listen to the musical talents of the big ticket names and the local celebrities, each and every day and night of heritage days.
The Saturday night Cabaret gives the over 18 crowd a night of fun and entertainment. Come on out to the Strathmore Heritage Days Stampede and let our Small Town atmosphere entertain you in a big way!
